18/10/2016 (Agence Europe) – The new European commissioner for Security Union, Sir Julian King, has warned Europe about the potential danger of jihadis returning to Europe after the Iraqi army’s attempts to seize the city of Mosul from so-called Islamic State. In an interview with German newspaper Die Welt, the British commissioner said this was a risk the EU had to prepare itself for even though there would not be a mass exodus of foreign fighters if the city fell. He said it was nevertheless a serious risk and that there are 2,500 foreign fighters in the Mosul area who originated in Europe. He added, however, that experience showed that only a few of them would return to Europe. The commissioner said it was at present too easy to avoid controls at Europe’s borders. (SP)
