Tibor Navracsics may be required to explain himself

07/10/2016 (Agence Europe)Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker may well have a few questions for Commissioner for Education Tibor Navracsics on the sidelines of the next meeting of the College, following his comments on the Hungarian referendum, deputy Commission spokesperson Alexander Winterstein has announced. The reason for this is that Navracsics, who is Hungarian and a member of Viktor Orbán's party (Fidesz), is reported to have said, following the Hungarian referendum on the European plan to distribute refugees, that the EU is not entitled to make decisions that are binding upon Hungary without the consent of the Hungarian Parliament. Navracsics was immediately accused of not defending the general interests of the EU.  "If Commissioner Navracsics does not believe in what his own Commission has proposed, instead taking the view that the national governments should not have to go along with decisions made by the whole of the EU, then we have a problem", was the bitter reaction of the leader of the S&D Group, Gianni Pittella.  (SPj)
