On Monday 3 October, the European Parliament’s civil liberties committee adopted a draft report by Sophie in’t Veld (ALDE, the Netherlands) recommending subjecting all member states to what is meant to be an apolitical monitoring mechanism for respect of democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights.
