04/10/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 4 October, the European Commission gave its conditional approval to the proposed acquisition of the French railway equipment manufacturer, Faiveley Transport, by its US competitor, Wabtec. The Commission had concerns about sintered friction materials for train brakes. These are key components in many modern train brake systems and train operators need to replace them regularly. The transaction as originally notified would have eliminated one of the three main suppliers on this market and led to a reduction in competition and an increase in prices for these products. In an effort to meet this concern, the parties involved will sell Faiveley Transport Gennevilliers, the "sintered friction materials" branch of Faiveley Transport. (EL)
