05/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – During the G20 summit in Hangzhou on Sunday 4 September, the pesident of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Junker, reframed perspectives for British prime minister Theresa May, who had sought to present her G20 peers with the different trade opportunities that will open up in the world for the United Kingdom, after its exit from the EU. Juncker reminded her that the negotiation of free trade agreements was an exclusive competence of the EU. "I do not like the idea that EU member states, including those that are still part of the EU, negotiate trade agreements. This is the exclusive remit of the EU, under the treaties, and we must abide by this", he stated. May had asserted the wish to begin bilateral talks immediately in order to help her country become “a world leader in free trade" following Brexit. (EH)
