05/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – Following the announcement by American group Caterpillar that it was making over 2,000 staff redundant from its Belgian site in Gosselies, European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs Marianne Thyssen said in a press statement to Belgian newspaper Le Soir, on Friday 2 September, that it was important "to carry out an assessment of the Stability and Growth Pact". "I'm not saying that everything has to be thrown overboard and that we divide up the debt and leave the next generation to deal with the problems. But we can look at the consequences of our policies on investment. This just needs to be done in an intelligent and cautious way. I said assessment and not revision", she added. (MB)
