26/08/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 25 August, the European Union expressed alarm at the death in prison of the Gambian opposition member Ebrima Solo Krummah, who died after undergoing surgery whilst being held in custody. "After the death of Solo Sandeng in April, this is the second time in a few months that a member of the opposition has died in custody. The Government of The Gambia should shed full light on the circumstances of these deaths allowing for an independent investigation", the spokesperson to the European External Action Service (EEAS) said in a press release issued on Thursday evening. He went on to stress that full respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms is "enshrined in the Gambian Constitution and in the international treaties". Ebrima Solo Krumach was arrested in May along with other UDP members during a peaceful demonstration against electoral reforms in The Gambia, but was not brought to court until June (EUROPE 11534).
