25/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU calls for calm in Kashmir. On Friday 22 July, the spokesperson for European External Action Service (EEAS) called for calm, despite the clashes between demonstrators and police in the Indian part of Kashmir that has led to the deaths of at least 45 people, following the killing on 8 July by Indian government forces of the rebel separatist chief Burhan Wani. The spokesperson issued a statement to a number of journalists including EUROPE, in which she pointed out that “The restoration of calm, and maintaining law and order with the necessary restraint, are vital to guarantee the safety and security of the people of Kashmir”. She also expressed the EU's support for the reconciliation process between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, “particularly through dialogue, and to call for the Kashmiri people themselves to be as involved as possible in this process”. The EEAS spokesperson also explained that “The EU continues to monitor the situation and remains in contact with Indian and Pakistani authorities”. (CG)
