An EU spokesperson called on Thursday evening 14 July for a “full and credible” investigation into the death of Cambodian political commentator Kem Ley, who was shot dead on Sunday 10 July. Government critic Kem Ley was closely involved in human rights. The spokesperson said that the EU would follow this matter carefully. “The Cambodian Government should re-engage in dialogue with the opposition”, added the spokesperson (EUROPE 11594), stating that the EU had called for the release of recently arrested NGO staff. He said that the EU is a “long-standing and important” partner to Cambodia and remains committed to the development of the country for the benefit of its citizens. (CG)
