Luxembourg, 28/06/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU agriculture ministers gave a relatively positive welcome in Luxembourg on Tuesday 28 June to legislative proposals on criteria for identifying endocrine disruptors (see EUROPE 11571 and 11573).
Health Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis presented to ministers the two proposals adopted on 15 June. The response from the member states was generally positive, he said.
France, seeking to improve the proposals which it felt did “not sufficiently protect health”, suggested that a number of classification categories be introduced. The point of such an approach would be to include substances where the risks of harmful effects on health linked to hormonal disruption are “suspected” (see EUROPE 11576). Denmark felt that the Commission was “ignoring the precautionary principle”.
The Commission called on the member states to submit their comments to it. These will be considered by the Council working group which will be able to bring amendments to the texts, the commissioner said. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
