Poroshenko hopes EU difficulties will stimulate new successes

Brussels, 28/06/2016 (Agence Europe) - During a visit to Brussels on Monday 27 June, Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko said he hoped the difficulties the EU was currently facing, especially the result of the British referendum on the UK's membership of the EU, would be a stimulus for the search for new successful integration projects, including that of Ukraine.

“The head of state expressed hope that current internal difficulties would not focus the EU's attention solely on its own problems. He is hopeful they will become a stimulus for the search for new successful European integration projects. And Ukraine can become such a project”, Poroshenko stated in a press release.

During his meeting with European Parliament President Martin Schulz, and also during his meeting with European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Poroshenko also discussed the crisis in eastern Ukraine (hoping for sanctions to be extended against Russia), visa liberalisation for Ukrainian citizens, reforms established by the Ukrainian authorities, and new EU macro-financial aid.

Elsewhere, as part of Poroshenko's visit to Brussels, Ukraine's general prosecutor, Yuriy Lutsenko, and the head of the European organisation for justice (Eurojust), Michèle Coninsx, signed a cooperation agreement. This agreement is one of the criteria of the action plan for the liberalisation of the visa regime. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
