On Thursday 19 May, the European Commission announced that Japan had lifted an embargo on Italian beef in place for 15 years, introduced because of the alleged risk of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (see EUROPE 11538). Japan lifted restrictions earlier to its market for beef products from France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Denmark and Sweden.
