MEPs want Lahore attack to be investigated

Brussels, 15/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - Strongly condemning the terrorist attack in Lahore on 27 March 2016 in which 70 people were killed and more than 300 injured, MEPs called on Thursday 14 April for the attack to be subject to an investigation and proceedings given the absolute necessity of bringing the culprits to justice.

In a common resolution by the ELDD, Greens/EFA, S&D, EPP, CRE and ALDE that they adopted, the MEPs criticise the use of the blasphemy law in the country, saying it is only increasing the climate of religious intolerance. The EP wants the government of Pakistan to review laws and their application to ensure that justice is correctly and rapidly applied in all blasphemy cases, highlighting the case of Asia Bibi (see EUROPE 11286). They also recall the importance of respect of the fundamental rights of all religious and ethnic minorities. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
