Brussels, 15/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 14 July, the European Parliament condemned the recent murder of a number of human rights activists in Honduras, calling in all urgency for immediate, independent, objective and in-depth investigations. The EP says that such investigations would make it possibly to have those responsible handed over and end their immunity.
In a common resolution of the CRE, ELDD, Greens/EFA, S&D, EPP, GUE/NGL and ALDE, that they adopted, the MEPs call on the EU delegation and the member states' representations in the country to monitor the processes associated with the investigations and step up efforts to make commitments with human rights activists currently in danger.
While being deeply concerned at the general human rights situation in Honduras, the European Parliament welcomes the recent judicial reforms and the government's work to remedy the current situation of human rights activists in the country. MEPs say it must be ensured that appropriate cooperation with civil society, the national protection system for human rights activists, journalists and law practitioners is fully operational and properly financed.
