15/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - Greens hit out at recommissioning of Belgian nuclear reactors Doel 3 and Tihange 2. On the basis of a counter-appraisal commissioned from materials scientist Dr Ilse Tweer, the Greens/EFA group at the European Parliament on Thursday 14 January challenged the assessment of the Belgian nuclear authority which allowed two Belgian nuclear reactors, unit 3 of the Doel power station and unit 2 of the Tihange power station to reopen, having been closed down in March 2014 following the discovery of tiny cracks. Dr Tweer's study (which is available at the following address: http://goo.gl/7m5rPZ ) contradicts the analysis carried out by the Belgian nuclear safety authority on some 40 points. “Operating these two reactors, which contain thousands of cracks, is irresponsible”, commented the co-president of the Greens/EFA group, Germany's Rebecca Harms.
