Ten countries requested to transpose deposit guarantee directive

Brussels, 10/12/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 10 December, the European Commission officially asked ten member states to fully transpose the directive (2014/49) on the national bank deposit guarantee schemes.

The ten member states which received a reasoned opinion are Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Sweden.

For the countries setting in place banking union in the eurozone, the implementation of the directive is a prerequisite for participation in the future European bank deposit insurance scheme. This future system, as proposed by the Commission, will be financed by a fully mutualised European guarantee fund and by the end of 2023, it will have an envelope of €43 billion fed into by the industry (see EUROPE 11337 and 11448).
