27/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - Slight improvement in energy efficiency of cars and vans. A report by the European Environment Agency (EEA), published on Thursday 26 November, reveals that the CO2 emissions of the vehicles sold in the EU in 2014 would be 2.5% lower than for vehicles sold on the European market in 2013. “The average emissions of a new car sold in 2014 were 123.4 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre (gCO2/km), significantly below the 2015 target of 130g CO2/km set for the EU as a whole”, the EEA states. Similarly, the average emissions from vans sold in 2014 were 169.1 g CO2/km, below the 2017 limit of 175 g CO2/km. According to the report, almost all manufacturers achieved their individual emissions targets set for 2014. Some questions may, nonetheless, be asked of these results in the wake of the Volkswagen revelations where tests under-estimated carbon dioxide emissions. (PH)
