Middle East, migration and Syria on Council agenda for 16 November

Brussels, 13/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - European foreign affairs ministers will meet at the Council of the EU in Brussels on Monday 16 November to discuss the Middle East peace process, the migration challenge, Syria and relations with the EU's Eastern partners.

There is currently little diplomatic initiative on the peace process, as one European diplomat noted. The discussion the ministers will have will therefore mainly be fed by the report from High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on her latest talks with the Israeli prime minister and Palestinian president.

The second session will focus on migration, following the different meetings held over recent weeks - the Valletta summit (see EUROPE 11429) and the high level conference on the Balkans route (see EUROPE 11407).

Over lunch, the ministers will discuss the Syrian conflict, taking account of the difficult talks taking place in Vienna (with another session planned for Saturday 14 November). The Council could also address the situation in Libya, just before the last item on the agenda which will be on relations with the Eastern European partners (especially Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova).

The Council is expected to adopt conclusions on Sri Lanka and Burundi without debate (see other article). After this EU foreign ministers' meeting, the EU-Georgia Association Council will take place in Brussels and will be attended by Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
