Performers call for right to fair online remuneration

Brussels, 06/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - On 1 October, the partners of the FAIR INTERNET campaign met with the European Commission Vice-President with responsibility for the Digital Single Market Strategy Andrus Ansip to set out for him their fears on the effect of the strategy on artists' rights.

The FAIR INTERNET campaign, which was launched in April in anticipation of the reform of the copyright framework - one of the objectives of the strategy - works to ensure fair remuneration for music and audiovisual performers in the digital environment (see EUROPE 11304).

The coalition partners reiterated their call to Commissioner Ansip that, in its revision of the framework, the Commission guarantee fair remuneration for performers, writers and rights holders. FAIR INTERNET stressed “the need for the European institutions to create a sustainable cultural and creative sector where performers get a fair share of online revenues, through an unwaivable remuneration right for digital uses of their work”. The partners thanked Ansip for his careful attention to their calls and for his commitment to ensuring their rights will be respected. (Original version in French by Isabelle Lamberty)
