26/08/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU condemns attack on ICRC. On Wednesday 26 August, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides strongly condemned the attack by armed gunmen on the offices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Aden, Yemen, which was carried out on Monday 24 August. “Such attacks are an affront to international humanitarian law. They not only threaten the safety of humanitarian workers but jeopardise the effective running of much needed humanitarian operations in Yemen”, he said, calling on all parties in the conflict “to cease targeting humanitarian workers”. The European Commission will continue to provide assistance to people throughout the country, Stylianides assured. The ICRC, which since March has provided humanitarian support to a million people in Aden, has also announced the continuation of its activities (providing food, water and health care) nationwide. Monday's attack resulted in the ICRC relocating 14 international co-workers. (AN)
