EU reiterates support for Lake Chad terrorism victims

Brussels, 28/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - On the day after the suicide attacks in Nigeria and Cameroon, the European Union expressed its solidarity on Monday 27 July, with these new victims of terrorism and all those in the Lake Chad region who have paid a terrible price in these repeated acts of terrorism.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, stated: “Over the past two months, around 800 people have been killed and many more injured in multiple terrorist attacks in countries neighbouring Lake Chad. Those responsible for the recent suicide attacks in Cameroon on 25 July and in Nigeria on 26 July are totally contemptuous of human life and dignity”.

Federica Mogherini expressed her condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured. She noted that “the Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria are doing all they can to fight terrorism”. She also said that the national and regional authorities in these countries, as well as civil society organisations promoting development, could count on the support of the EU.

In a press release, the EU High Representative explained: “The continuation of long-term development, the protection and strengthening of basic services and respect for humanitarian law and human rights are essential for guaranteeing a strengthened presence of the state and sustainable solution to the crisis. The EU supports these bilateral cooperation and regional efforts to tackle these challenges”. (Aminata Niang)
