Brussels, 28/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 28 July, the US ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, explained that Ukraine now had to wage “two wars” at the same time, one in the east of the country “against Russia” and the other one in carrying out reforms.
Pyatt was speaking during a teleconference with the press, together with the EU ambassador in Ukraine, Jan Tombinski. The latter said that any additional military action by the separatists would have a “dramatic” effect on finding a political solution to the crisis. Although Pyatt believes that Ukraine is implementing the Minsk agreement, he believes that this is not the case with the Russians and that the Kremlin's attitude is always “unpredictable and irresponsible”.
The US ambassador also considers that the progress in the reforms that the Ukraine is making is clearly visible and it is therefore important that the country continues down this path. Tombinski added that he believed it was important that these reforms were based more on a “bottom-up” approach and he emphasised that civil society also had to be more involved in this effort.
Pyatt also underlined the importance of cooperation between the EU and US regarding Ukraine and described the partnership with the EU as of “critical importance”. According to Pyatt, there is nothing more important for the Ukrainian leaders than cooperation between the EU and US. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
