28/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - Stylianides fears destabilisation of Kurdistan. European Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Christos Stylianides has called for international humanitarian law to be respected by all parties in the Iraqi conflict and for international humanitarian efforts for Iraq to be stepped up. “Together, we need to make sure that access to safe ground for all civilians is granted. The principle of distinction between combatants and civilians must be respected. We need to address humanitarian needs head on, as failing to do so could have a major destabilising effect on the Kurdish Region of Iraq and the whole country”, he argued on his return on Monday 27 July from a second visit to Iraqi Kurdistan. In response to the Iraq Humanitarian Response Plan launched by the EU and the United Nations, the EU recently allocated a further €25 million, taking its humanitarian aid to Iraq to over €65.5 million this year (see EUROPE 11328) (AN)
