20/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU criticises attacks in Iraq for Eid. On Saturday 18 July, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini criticised the terrorist attack on the day marking the end of Ramadan. The attack resulted in the loss of over 100 lives and left many wounded in the Iraqi province of Diyala. Eid is “a day to hope for peace and joy”, said Mogherini's spokesperson. The perpetrators of the crimes must be brought to justice, the spokesperson added. The attack has been claimed by Islamic State (IS). “Such violence tries to undermined Iraq's efforts to return to peace and stability (…) We stand together with the Iraqi people in our common fight against terrorism and sectarian violence”, the spokesperson stated, adding that the EU remains committed to contributing to regional and international efforts to tackle violent extremism and terrorist groups that threaten stability.
