Brussels, 02/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - At the European Parliament on Wednesday 1 July, the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mustafa Akinci, underlined his resolve for a solution to the Cypriot issue.
“We want a solution for our population. We don't want to continue with the status quo. We want to create a better future for the young population”, Akinci said, during a press conference with European Parliament President Martin Schulz. Stating that he wanted “a bi-community and bi-zonal federation with political equality”, Akinci said he believed that the two communities were involved in “the right talks”.
He also said that as a Turkish Cypriot he had “one more reason to fight for a solution” in that the Turkish Cypriots have been “outside international law for many years”. “We want to be part of the EU family, in the framework of international law”, he said.
Schulz stated that is was very much in the EU's interest for the talks to be a success. He said that the European Parliament would do its utmost to contribute to the success of the talks. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
