EU calls for perpetrators of attacks to be brought to justice

Brussels, 02/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 1 July, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini called for the perpetrators and sponsors of the terrorist attack against military posts in northern Sinai (Egypt) to be brought to justice. The attack reportedly claimed around 30 lives. Four other attacks were launched simultaneously against four army road blocks. Clashes also took place between soldiers and terrorists, resulting in the loss of life of around 30 terrorists.

“Violence and murder are the means the terrorists use to try and undermine our societies in Europe, in Africa and in the Middle East. We will remain united in tackling this common threat and together with all those who respect the value of life”, Mogherini stated in a press release. She said that the EU was steadfast and resolute in its support for the people and government of Egypt in the fight against terrorism.

These attacks come in the wake of the bomb attack that killed the general prosecutor in Cairo. Following this attack, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi promised tougher legislation “to fight against terrorism”.

Mogherini expressed the EU's condolences to the families of the victims and the Egyptian authorities. “Our thoughts are with the Egyptian people”, she said. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
