01/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - EBRD support for Turkey's largest geothermal power plant. With a loan of $200 million, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has played a key role in securing 15-year financing to build the largest geothermal power plant in Turkey. The capacity of the Efeler geothermal plant, which is due to be completed by the end of 2015, will be 170 megawatts. This will increase the geothermal capacity installed in Turkey by around 30% and will contribute to the country's 2023 renewable energy objectives. Turkey wants to add 34 gigawatts of hydro electricity, 20 gigawatts of wind energy, 5 gigawatts of solar energy, one gigawatt of biomass energy and one gigawatt of geothermal energy to its energy mix by 2023. Turkey's geothermal potential is estimated at 4 gigawatts, but currently only 427 megawatts has been developed. (EH)
