Kirkhope wants EU to get migrant situation in Calais under control

Brussels, 24/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 23 June, Timothy Kirkhope MEP (ECR, United Kingdom) called on the French government to urgently respond to the migrants in Calais, who are attempting to get into the United Kingdom.

In a press release, the British Conservative Party member indicated that the failure of the French government to fulfil its duty of tackling the migrant crisis is continuing in Calais. The Mayor of Calais, Natacha Bouchart, criticised the British government for not spending a single cent on the migrants.

Kirkhope is hoping that the Commission takes France to task for its inability to process the asylum seekers stuck at the border.

On Tuesday, the European Commission explained that at this stage it had not received any specific complaints regarding the situation in Calais. Nonetheless, it did acknowledge that the conditions were difficult and were particularly creating problems for the maritime and road transport sectors.

Slovakian lorry drivers have called on their government to put their case to the French authorities to resolve the situation and have mentioned problems involving security. (Solenn Paulic with Camille-Cerise Gessant)
