Post-2015 sustainable development programme on menu of G7

Brussels, 05/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - Following the European Development Days, the G7 summit, to meet at Schloss Elmau (Germany) on 7 and 8 June, will give the heads of state or government of the seven most industrialised countries in the world the opportunity to give a shot in the arm to international talks on the future universal sustainable development programme post-2015.

This subject is unavoidable in this critical year between the expiry of the millennium development goals (MDG) and the forthcoming objectives of eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable development, to be decided upon in September in New York, at the 69th United Nations General Assembly (see EUROPE 11327).

The final declaration will be a major contribution to the third UN conference on the financing of development post-2015 (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 13-16 July), which is a pillar for the implementation of the future global partnership for sustainable development, and for the Paris climate conference (COP 21). There is strong synergy between these three events.

The WWF is making no mistake about it. “G7 leaders must take decisive action on climate change and the full range of the sustainable development measures. G7 countries are history's big emitters (of greenhouse gases: Ed). WWF expects them to support a rapid renewable energy transition in developing countries while securing a long-term goal for eliminating fossil fuels by 2050”, Marco Lambertini, director general of WWF International, said on Friday.
