Brussels, 05/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - In addition to the discussions on the climate negotiations ahead of the UN conference to be held in Paris in December (COP 21), the leaders of the G7 (Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom) will meet at Schloss Elmau on 7 and 8 June, to discuss energy security, including the G7 initiative in this field agreed upon in Rome in May 2014. For the EU, this initiative goes hand in hand with the aim to build an Energy Union.
In light of the crisis in Ukraine and tension with Russia, the G7 leaders agreed, at their summit in Brussels in June of last year, to develop a medium-term strategy to diversify their sources of supply and modernise their energy infrastructure (see EUROPE 11095). At this meeting, the G7 leaders also approved the initiative prepared the month before in Rome by their energy minister (see EUROPE 11073). (Emmanuel Hagry)
