Brussels, 13/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - The chairperson of the European Parliament's culture committee, Silvia Costa (S&D, Italy), said that although seeking to increase access to cultural content is a positive thing, content creators and authors should also be protected.
Costa expressed a number of ideas regarding the European Parliament's priorities on its agenda for the education, culture and audio-visual sector for 2015. She referred to the issue of copyright in Europe and said that it was very important to reach a balance between these two aspects. She also said that the culture committee was pleased to see that education had been included among the five priorities in the investment plan of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
In addition to revision of the framework on copyright, the Parliament's culture committee will also be prioritising revision of the directive on audio-visual media services and other convergent dossiers this year, said Costa. Updating the culture work plan will also be on the agenda of MEPs from this parliamentary committee. Costa would like the cultural and creative sectors in the EUROPE 2020 strategy to be more systematically highlighted in the work of the European institutions. She concluded that “when industry, growth and competitiveness are involved, we want the cultural and creative industries to be included, without having to insist on this point every single time”. (IL)
