Philae to resume exploration in March

Brussels, 06/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - The batteries of robotic lander Philae are expected to be recharged by the end of March, allowing it to resume its exploration work on comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko (or Chury, for short). Philae landed on the comet on 12 November of last year after a ten-year-long journey aboard the Rosetta spacecraft carefully guided by the European Space Agency. Three days later, the lander went into safe mode, sooner than planned, because its final stop was in a shaded position shielded from the sunshine required to charge its batteries. Jean-Yves Le Gall, the head of the French Space Agency, which is playing a leading role in the exploration mission, confirmed on 5 January that the “Philae saga” will continue in 2015. “We are hoping to get real-time experience at perihelion (Ed: when the comet passes closest to the sun) on 13 August. I am sure we'll see things that we never imagined”, he said. (MD)
