Brussels, 04/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 4 December, the European Commission adopted a €180 million package in order to address the Syrian crisis - in Syria itself and also the effects of it being felt in Lebanon and Jordan. These countries are between them hosting 1.7 million refugees.
The European aid will focus in particular on education for children and young people, in line with the UNICEF-sponsored “No lost generation” initiative, and also on measures to improve the resilience of the refugees as well as the communities hosting them, through economic development activities.
A sum of €41 million from this funding will enable assistance to be provided to the Syrian people still in the country. The refugees and host communities in Lebanon will be given up to €73 million, and €66 million will be given to those in Jordan.
Since the start of the Syrian crisis, the European budget and the member states have mobilised €2.9 billion to alleviate its effects. (CG)
