Brussels, 13/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - Europe is tackling the problem of a proliferation in the number of jellyfish in the Mediterranean. In this connection, it has announced the first results from the MED JELLYRISK project, which received funding of €2.59 million from the European neighbourhood and partnership instrument for cross-border cooperation in the Mediterranean. The results were presented on Tuesday 11 November in a report on the use of protection nets in a pilot zone in Tunisia. The official presentation indicates a need to, “put into place integrated monitoring and prevention systems, as well as socio-economic impact assessments of this threat”.
The project is being carried out over a 36-month period (December 2012-December 2015). It is also being promoted by five specialist institutes in northern and southern Mediterranean countries and seeks to tackle the proliferation of jellyfish in the Mediterranean and harmonise the different methods used to tackle this problem.
