13/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU should take more active role on name issue. On Wednesday 12 November, after a meeting with Nikola Poposki, the foreign affairs minister of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn said he believed the EU should play a more active role in resolving the name issue of Macedonia. “It is important that the EU take a more active role” on the name issue, he said, adding that this is something on which he will work. New discussions on the name “Macedonia” took place under the auspices of the United Nations in New York on 12 November. Hahn also stated that the European Commission was ready to bring all the assistance necessary to discuss issues linked to the constitutional changes. He added that it was important to have direct exchanges between the EU and FYROM. “FYROM is among the first points on our enlargement agenda”, he said. (CG)
