Brussels, 12/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - It is in the strongest terms that on Tuesday 11 November the EU condemned the previous day's suicide bombing that killed 47 secondary school children in a government school in Potiskum, the capital of Yobe state in Nigeria (north east of the country). A suicide bomber had already claimed around 30 lives there the previous week.
“The latest act of terror perpetrated by a suicide bomber targeting a government senior school in Potiskum, Yobe state, killing at least 47 children and leaving over 79 injured, is appalling. The killing and abduction of innocent school children is always abhorrent”, said a statement published by the spokesperson of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.
The EU offers its condolences to the families of the children who died and wishes a speedy recovery to those who have been injured. It calls on the government of Nigeria to make a concerted effort to stop the insurgency and to bring those responsible to justice.
The suicide bomber entered the school building disguised as a school child. The attack has not been claimed but the police accuse the Islamist group Boko Haram of perpetrating it. The EU reiterates its commitment to supporting the fight against extremism and terrorism. (AN)
