Brussels, 12/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - At the Agriculture Council of Monday 10 November, Greece called for the adoption of additional targeted measures to support the peach and nectarine sector, which has been hit by the ban set in place by Russia on the import of agricultural products from the EU.
Greece believes that the emergency measures already taken in August to support the peach and nectarine market (as well as actions in favour of perishable fruit and vegetables) have failed to offset the negative impact of the Russian ban. The Greek application had the support of the Polish, Romanian, Cypriot and Spanish ministers. Phil Hogan, the European Commissioner for Agriculture, responded by saying that the Commission was closely following developments on the markets, whilst announcing that prices for peaches and nectarines in Greece were higher than in other areas. He reiterated the constraints on the 2015 budget. (LC)
