EU calls for tension to be eased

Brussels, 12/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 11 November, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said she was particularly sad and concerned at the escalation of violence in the Middle East and at the death of two Israelis the previous day. She said that if a political perspective is not offered for both for the Israelis to live in peace and for the Palestinians to have their own state, there is a risk of the return to violence very quickly and very dramatically.

The previous day, Mogherini's spokesperson strongly condemned the “terrible acts of terror” in Israel and the West Bank, and urged the political leaders “to act responsibly and to work for a quick de-escalation of tensions”.

An Israeli solider and an Israeli woman were killed in two knife attacks by Palestinians - the first in Tel Aviv and the second in the West Bank. This second attack left two people wounded. Over the weekend, an Arab Israeli was beaten by police. During the night of 11-12 November, a mosque in the occupied West Bank was set on fire. The fire could have been started by Israeli settlers.
