Brussels, 09/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 9 October, the European Commission decided - in agreement with member states - that two telecommunications markets in the European telecoms sector should no longer be subject to regulation, and that two others should be redefined to reflect market and technology developments. These rules take effect immediately.
The two markets that will no longer be subject to regulation are the retail market for access to fixed telephony, and the wholesale market for fixed call origination. The Commission is also redefining two broadband markets in order to limit regulatory burdens to what is strictly necessary for competitive broadband access and investment in this sector. European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes has thus announced a 30% cut in red tape in the telecoms sector. Some telecoms markets continue to have very high entry barriers. (LC)
