Brussels, 09/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - Should there be obligatory screening tests for Ebola in European airports? The United States has decided to bring them in at five of its major international airports (JFK, Newark, Washington-Dulles, Atlanta and Chicago). Passengers travelling from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea will be obliged to fill in a questionnaire and their temperature will be taken. Nothing of this kind is being applied in European airports as yet and it is a matter for the member states to decide, stressed Frédéric Vincent, the spokesperson to the European Health Commissioner. The idea of borrowing the American approach was raised at the meeting of the Health Security Committee on 8 October and will also be on the agenda of its meeting next week, the spokesperson added. Airport controls are in place in countries affected by the Ebola epidemic for outbound passengers, as called for by the World Health Organisation (WHO). However, the WHO does not necessarily recommend that additional tests are carried out in the destination airports. (MD)
