Brussels, 05/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - Following the controversy generated by application of the Uber car-share scheme (that is banned in Germany), the European Commission has decided to investigate. Commission departments will consider car-pooling in the light of freedom of establishment to see whether further measures are needed at national or EU level. European Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas and Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes say that the laws on taxis are in the hands of the member states, but they have to ensure that the freedom of establishment guaranteed by the treaties is not jeopardised. The Commission says it “strongly supports the development of new and innovative mobility services since they can increase transparency, choice and convenience of transport services and reduce costs for consumers.” (MD)
