25/08/2014 (Agence Europe) - Rome wants publication of negotiating mandate for transatlantic treaty. Italy, which currently holds the presidency of the EU, has sent a letter to its European partners asking them to agree to publication of the European Commission's mandate in its discussions with Washington on a transatlantic trade treaty. In the letter, which is also signed by European Commissioner for Trade Karel De Gucht, the Italian government says it sees this initiative as a way “to promote a better perception and awareness of public opinion as to the objectives of the trade negotiation with the US”, said a press release from the Italian Ministry of Economic Development. De Gucht has always favoured publication, but some member states are opposed to it. (LC)
