Merkel backs De Guindos as new Eurogroup head

Brussels, 25/08/2014 (Agence Europe) - Germany backs the official candidacy of Spanish economy minister Luis De Guindos to become the new head of the Eurogroup.

“As far as the question of the future Eurogroup head is concerned, once the current president's term expires, we will support the candidacy of Mr de Guindos”, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Santiago de Compostella on Monday 25 August after a meeting with the Spanish prime minister, according to a Bloomberg report.

The term of office of the current head of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, expires in 2015, but the next Eurogroup head may be selected along with other top European jobs at a special summit of EU leaders in Brussels on Saturday 20 August.

Merkel hailed the excellent work by the Spanish minister, who at one time headed up the now defunct American business bank Lehman Brothers, during the banking and economic crisis that rocked Spain. (MB)
