Brussels, 25/08/2014 (Agence Europe) - In response to the increased violence in Libya, which has claimed over 600 lives and forced at least 10,000 families to flee the fighting, the EU has allocated €215,774 to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in order to channel urgent humanitarian aid to those in greatest need, the European Commission stated on Friday 22 August.
The funding will enable the supply of food aid and basic necessities (including blankets, mattresses and cooking utensils), as well as psychological support to the displaced people and vulnerable host communities.
After over a month of fighting between rival militia groups, the Libyan people are faced with difficulties of food supply in Tripoli and Benghazi, serious shortages of electricity, and great difficulty in obtaining cash as the banks have closed. (AN)
