Several KLA leaders to be tried for crimes against humanity

Brussels, 30/07/2014 (Agence Europe) - Several leaders of the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) will be tried for crimes against humanity and organ trafficking before the court in charge of judging war crimes committed during the Serbo-Kosovan conflict in 1999 - a court that has still to be set up. This is what was announced by US prosecutor Clint Williamson in Brussels on Tuesday 29 July at the end of three years of investigation in Kosovo and Albania for the European Union. The EU had tasked Williamson with this investigation as part of the EULEX operation, and it confirms the accusations of Dick Marty (Switzerland) from the Council of Europe - who at the end of 2010 produced a report on the kidnappings, torture and organ trafficking. Williamson nevertheless stated that the organ extractions from victims of the conflict remained limited to fewer than a dozen cases. The KLA leaders were particularly blamed for the organ extractions (from Serbs). Exaggerating the figures or saying that every Serb reported missing or killed was the victim of organ extraction serves no purpose, but increases the distress of the families of those who disappeared, because there is no proof, said Williamson.

The individuals who will be tried were at the top of the KLA military hierarchy, Williamson stated, adding that, at the current time, there will be a single act of accusation targeting several people. He refused to give the identities of the people who will be tried. The investigation led by Williamson's staff focuses on around 500 people who were killed, around 300 who were kidnapped and around 200,000 who were displaced. (SP)
