On Thursday 17 July, the European Union said that it expects Azerbaijan to act in line with its responsibility as president-in-exercise of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and to honour its obligations and commitments as a member of the Council, following the sentencing of a human rights activist. Hasan Huseynli, the leader of an NGO, who was “harshly” sentenced by the Ganja Court on 14 July 2014 to six years' imprisonment on “alleged charges of hooliganism”, said the spokespersons to the High Representative and the Enlargement Commissioner. “This sentence is part of a disturbing trend”, they added.
