Names of 14 vice-presidents announced

Strasbourg, 01/07/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 1 July, the European Parliament elected its 14 new vice-presidents.

All of the EPP Group candidates were approved in the first round, whilst the second round saw the candidates of the S&D Group obtain the majority needed. It took until the third round until the candidates of the ECR, ALDE, GUE/NGL and Greens/EFA Groups were confirmed.

The following Christian Democrats have been elected vice-presidents: Rainer Wieland (Germany), Adina Iiona Valean (Romania), Ramon Luis Valcarcel Siso (Spain), former European Commissioner for Industry Antonio Tajani (Italy), Ildiko Gall-Pelcz (Hungary) and Mairead McGuiness (Ireland). For the Social Democrats, the candidacies of David Sassoli (Italy), Sylvie Guillaume (France) and Corina Cretu (Romania) were approved. For the Liberals, the former Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Olli Rehn of Finland, and the German Alexander Graf Lambsdorff acceded to the vice-presidency of the EP. They were joined by Dimitris Papadimoulis (Greece) for the GUE/NGL, Ulrike Lunacek (Austria) for the Greens and Ryszard Czarnecki (Poland) for the Conservatives. Only Italy's Fabio Massimo Castaldo, a member of the Europhobic group EFD, fell by the wayside. (EL)
