FOEE tells Commission to get serious on energy efficiency

Brussels 30/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - In response to the European Commission's statement that it was about to propose an indicative energy efficiency target of 27% to the EU, the NGO Friends of the Earth (FOEE) called on the Commission to get serious: “A 27% energy savings target is incomprehensible at a time when the EU is crying out for a way to reduce dependence on imported energy. The political conditions to set an ambitious energy savings target have never been better. It is now vital that Germany, Denmark and the other countries make sure you get serious on energy savings”.

FOEE points out that the majority of EU28 governments want to increase energy efficiency to reduce their energy dependency and the Commission impact analysis itself shows that 40% of energy savings would reduce imports by 40% (while 28% of energy savings would lead to a reduction in energy imports of only 16% compared to 1990 levels).
