Italy cannot see Katainen Economic Affairs

Brussels, 30/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - Over the weekend, Italian Minister for European Affairs Sandro Gozi cast doubt over the possibility that Conservative Jyrki Katainen, who has been put forward as interim Finnish Commissioner by his government, will take over from fellow Finn, Liberal Olli Rehn, who is leaving for Strasbourg. During the European summit, “we gather that there is a considerable change from outgoing Commissioner Olli Rehn and the way he has applied the rules”, Gozi wrote on his Facebook page (our translation), adding that it was “very difficult when one country has the same portfolio for 10 years”, even though this choice is a prerogative of the future Commission president, he said. The former Finnish prime minister recently stepped down for Alexander Stubb to take over, as he seeks a “big” job at EU level. (SP)
