Brussels, 30/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - The European Union ambassador to Morocco, Rupert Joy, has congratulated Morocco on the quality of it welcome for migrants transiting Moroccan soil. “Thanks to the EU-Morocco mobility partnership signed on 27 June 2013, the EU and its member states have an appropriate framework for cooperating with Morocco and supporting it in implementing the different axes of its new migratory policy - especially supporting its efforts to integrate migrants that have been made legal”, he said on Friday.
Morocco has become a land of transit towards the EU. It has been criticised in the past by various human rights associations for the way it treated migrants. The Moroccan authorities stated that they wanted to rectify this. They set up ad hoc committees to ensure migrants were treated better - including making them legal, which became operational at the end of last week.
“I want to congratulate the latest initiatives taken by Morocco to implement its new migratory policy and make it operational. These initiatives are both encouraging and responsible”, Joy sated. He also hailed “Morocco's commitment to associate civil society in the implementation and success of this policy”.
The European Union, Joy states, wants to be “a strategic partner for Morocco on all issues linked to migration and mobility” (our translation throughout). (FB)
